How does calibration compliance work in Germany?
Germany runs two systems in parallel and mixing them up is the classic audit finding. For quality-system calibration, laboratories are accredited by DAkkS (Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle) to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, with traceability to PTB, the national metrology institute. For instruments used in commercial or official transactions — scales, fuel dispensers, meters — the Eichrecht applies instead: the MessEG and MessEV, with their own Eichfrist that has nothing to do with your internal calibration interval. On top sit the sector rules: the automotive supply base (IATF 16949) and precision-engineering Mittelstand are audited hard on measuring-equipment control, and medical-device makers additionally fall under EU MDR (Regulation (EU) 2017/745).
DAkkS: one accreditor, no shopping around
DAkkS is the national accreditation body of the Federal Republic of Germany and the sole provider of accreditation here, under Regulation (EC) No 765/2008 and the AkkStelleG — and DAkkS itself was assessed to EN ISO/IEC 17011 in 2010. It accredits and monitors calibration laboratories to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 across roughly 4,300 accreditation cases. Accreditation is granted per scope, so check the laboratory's scope covers your measurand and range — not just that it holds a DAkkS logo.
What a DKD-Kalibrierschein actually proves
Common misunderstanding: DKD is not a second accreditation body. The DKD accreditation body was subsumed into DAkkS on 17 December 2009, and today the Deutscher Kalibrierdienst is headed by PTB, which owns the "DKD" mark and grants the right to use it — so accredited laboratories may still print the DKD logo on a Kalibrierschein. Practical rule: an accredited certificate means the laboratory's competence was independently assessed; a Werkskalibrierung can still be traceable but carries no third-party assessment. Record which kind you hold per instrument. DAkkS and PTB are also preparing a digital accreditation symbol and digital calibration certificate, so plan for machine-readable certificates.
Eichrecht: the Eichfrist is not your calibration interval
If you measure for commercial or official transactions, the MessEG and MessEV (in force since 1 January 2015) apply on top of ISO 17025 work. The default Eichfrist is two years unless specified otherwise — water and heat meters get six under MessEV Annex 7 — initial verification is now folded into the Konformitätsbewertung, and the Eichbehörden supervise use.
